57 | TRAILER TUESDAY | 57
In a surprising turn of events, my projected number one movie for the weekend box office, Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, came in second with just under 23M$. It was toppled by Boo! A Madea Halloween. I understand it's just over a week before the holiday lands, but I would have bet money on the Reacher sequel. Keeping Up with the Jonses, however, took the biggest blow, barely bringing in 5.5M$. If Inferno doesn't knock them all down a peg this weekend, Doctor Strange certainly will in two weeks.
Once again, we have another mixed bag of trailers, but there are definitely some awesome ones, so enjoy!
Bad Santa 2 (11/23/2016):
Billy Bob Thornton (Armageddon, Sling Blade) and Tony Cox (Oz the Great and Powerful, Me, Myself, & Irene) return as Santa and his Little Helper conmen, as they team up (albeit reluctantly it seems) to swindle a charity with the help of Willie's charming mother (played by Kathy Bates — Fried Green Tomatoes, Misery). Brett Kelly (Trick 'r Treat, The Sandlot 2) also reprises his role, but unfortunately we will miss out on the talents of late actors Bernie Mac (The Bernie Mac Show, Ocean's Eleven), and John Ritter (8 Simple Rules, It). The addition of Christina Hendricks (Drive, Mad Men), however, never hurts!
I know there are a lot of people excited about this sequel — it's been talked about for years now — but I'm fairly indifferent. I realize the original is a cult classic, but I can't remember much about it. That's not to say I the trailer doesn't have its funny moments (there is a raunchier red-band trailer as well). I'm sure the movie will be filled with crude humor that I'd normally enjoy. I may just have to recap the first movie. Until then, I am a bit torn. Hopefully this sequel lives up to the fans' expectations!
Why Him? (12/23/2016):
Ever since Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston (Total Recall, John Carter) has been a lead actor in many film projects, but none seem to be extremely popular with audiences. Or maybe just with me? I personally remember his smaller, supporting roles the most, like in Godzilla. It will be great seeing him in a comedy, though, and I'm really hoping this turns out to be good. I remain hesitantly optimistic. Given Jonah Hill (War Dogs, Superbad) is one of the script writers, I should like the content. Like Bad Santa 2, there is a red-band trailer, which is a bit better.
Cranston is joined by James Franco (Goat, True Story), Zoey Deutch (Dirty Grandpa, Beautiful Creatures), and Megan Mullally (Bee Movie, Will & Grace), with supporting castmates Adam Devine (Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, The Intern), Griffin Gluck (Trust Me, Sideways), andKeegan-Michael Key (Don't Think Twice, Tomorrowland). Overall the chemistry between the cast looks good, and there should be enough comedic chops to offer viewers a lot of laughs throughout. At least I'm hoping!
A Cure for Wellness (2/17/2017):
Gore Verbinski (The Weatherman, The Ring) directs this cerebral thriller starring Mia Goth (Everest, The Survivalist), Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, Lawless), and Jason Isaacs (Black Hawk Down, The Patriot). I have enjoyed Verbinski's earlier films, like Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, but have been wary of most thereafter (likely because of the Pirates sequels). This movie, however, seems very intriguing. It looks like the green hue/filter used in The Ring is present as well, which gives it a subtle, creepy vibe.
This is a really well done trailer. From the music featured to the scene selections to the limited dialogue. It leaves me fascinated and curious, wanting to learn more about the movie. I'd very much be interested in seeing this in the theater and I'm not even familiar with the cast. I'll definitely be avoiding future trailers for this film, as I want to be left just enough in the dark to not fully know what to expect!
Logan (3/3/2017):
Speaking of well done trailers, I think this one is amazing! It's true, I haven't seen the newest X-Men movie and I avoided the original Wolverine film (which was sort of retconned along with the third X-Men movie), but I'm all in with Logan! Like A Cure for Wellness, we have a great cover song, limited dialogue, and a series of cut together scenes that leaves me wanting more. Hugh Jackman (Pan, Real Steel) has done an amazing job in the role of Wolverine, but this film marks his departure from the character (then again, I thought Patrick Stewart — Ted 2, Bambi II — was also done portraying Professor X).
I am assuming this movie is loosely based on the Wolverine: Old Man Logan comics. I never read the series, but I've heard they were really popular. The films have always deviated quite a bit from the source material and despite my love for the comics, I never felt they were extremely poorly represented, like some do. One major difference with this Wolverine movie, however, is that it will be rated R, most likely due to the success of Deadpool. Perhaps this will allow for a more genuinely savage feel that many fans have wanted from the character. It will be interesting. Like most of the movies above, there is a red-band trailer, but their was only one small two to three second clip difference where Wolverine uses his claws in a more graphic nature. I will also avoid future trailers, because I think this one is so good.
I'm really excited about Logan and I'm definitely hoping to see it in theaters when released! Doris Morgado (2 Guns, Hall Pass), Boyd Holbrook (Run All Night, Milk), and Dafne Keen (The Refugees) also star.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - Teaser Trailer (5/5/2017):
Star-Lord returns! Who? Don't bullshit me, you know who he is now, even if you weren't ever familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy comics before the first movie released! I know I wasn't! This is just a short teaser trailer, nothing about the plot is really explored, minus a lovelorn Star-Lord. It looks like all of the original cast have returned — Chris Pratt (Wanted, The Extreme Team), Zoe Zaldana (Star Trek Beyond, Premium), Dave Bautista (Spectre, The Man with the Iron Fists), Vin Diesel (Babylon A.D., A Man Apart), and Bradley Cooper (Nip/Tuck, Yes Man). It looks like Michael Rooker (Jumper, Cliffhanger) is also back, and this time it seems his character, Yondu, is a part of the team (I believe in the comics he was a first generation Guardian of the Galaxy).
Not much is known about the plot, aside from Star-Lord attempting to learn more about his father, which from my understanding strays from the comics. Having no attachment to the source material, however, will allow me to enjoy the shenanigans and obvious trouble this ragtag superhero group is bound to find themselves in! I'll likely be posting a full-length trailer once one comes out.
