XXX | TRAILER TUESDAY | XXX
Given that 30 translates to triple X I'm imagining this post will be inadvertently viewed across the internet from users everywhere! Though I had some trailers planned for tonight's entry, I'm going to shift in three movies with a more romantic/erotic vibe (albeit light). One for each X! Then another two movies for good measure.
The Meddler (4/22/2016):
I think this movie looks really cute. Susan Sarandon is so adorable. I was going to say I haven't seen her in a movie in ages, but I just looked it up and remembered Tammy. Oh lordie, that was a terrible movie. Not her acting or role, just it itself. This movie looks worlds better and I'm hoping it does really well. I'm not so familiar with Rose Byrne, but I have really enjoyed some of the roles J.K. Simmons has take over the past few years.
The trailer is really well put together. They keep the tone fairly light and fluffy, but I suspect that the movie itself may take on some more serious relationship topics at some point. Possibly leading to a fairly heart-wrenching affair. I'll try to remember to share the trailer for Mother's Day next week, which is one of those staple mass ensemble cast movies based on a holiday you've seen time and again. My guess is this movie would be a much better option to see!
The Neon Demon (June 2016):
Okay, so this movie looks really intriguing! The trailer is very well put together, from the scenes, the chosen voice overs, the music. All of it is really well done. First off, though, I'm curious about the Amazon Studios. Is this Amazon's first foray into a feature length film? Is this movie that will only be available on Amazon Prime? I've no flippin' idea. I'd like to find out.
I never saw the movie Drive. I know from the trailers I saw and posted ages ago that it looks visually stunning. I also heard that the movie had some gut-wrenching, brutal scenes. Scenes people wouldn't have expected from the artistic portrayal of the trailer. I still think I'd like the movie a lot, but I just haven't gotten around to see it.
This movie boasts of Keanu Reeves, and I was excited by that, but I don't believe I caught him in the trailer anywhere. So his role is unknown to me. I think focusing on the central character, and slowly building up the tension you know exists, was a wise choice for the first trailer (possibly a teaser trailer?). I also notice it's considered a horror film (Elle Fanning's deadpan stare is creepy enough), which you catch a glimpse of towards the end of the trailer. Again, all very intriguing
I guess one issue I have is that the director has his initials "NWR" on the title screen? What's that all about? Dude, okay, so you're a visionary director? Cool, but that just seems pompous to me...
Equals (7/15/2016):
Right away this film's premise — a monitored collective, emotions being a danger and suppressed — reminds me of Equilibrium (Christian Bale, Sean Bean), a great, underrated independent movie I'd recommend checking out! This looks to be more of a love story, however, where that one was more action/thriller based. I've also seen this compared to THX 1138, a movie I haven't seen but also heard Equilibrium compared to it.
Comparisons aside, I think this movie looks interesting. The trailer is well done, hinting at the setting the world takes place in and what struggles will be faced between the central characters, played by Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, Warm Bodies, Skins). I get the impression it's going to be a very slow-burning artistic film. Likely a bit depressing, given the plot, but I'm assuming that's the journey the audience will take with these characters throughout the movie. Breaking free from oppression and embracing your emotions.
I'm a huge fan of the artist who's song is featured in the trailer. Aurora, check out her work!
When the Bough Breaks (9/16/2016):
I think this movie looks really good, but I'm uncertain how well I will handle the subject matter. The whole surrogate aspect is fine, but when they start talking about hurting and/or killing the unborn child, I just don't know. Beyond that, this looks like a great psychological thriller. The trailer is well crafted, especially with the music selection, and the acting looks really good. Especially Jaz Sinclair who is playing the surrogate. It looks like she does a little too good tapping into some crazy!
I'm curious to see how Theo Rossi is in this. I'm only familiar with him from Sons of Anarchy. I was pretty hit or miss with his character, but he was good in the role. As for the leads Regina Hall (Barber Shop: The Next Cut, Scary Movie) and Morris Chestnut (Kick-Ass 2, The Perfect Guy), it looks like they do a fantastic job as a married couple struggling with being unable to conceive a child. It looks organic and not forced, so it should make for some very emotional scenes throughout the movie.
Doctor Strange - Teaser Trailer (11/4/2016):
Doctor Strange just missed being included in last week's Trailer Tuesday. I already had my post set up and late in the evening it popped up online. I was, however, able to talk about it some on my other blog's (I, Jak) A to Z "M" post for Marvel.
As I mentioned there, I'm extremely excited about this newest Marvel movie. Again, they manage to take a character I know very little about, having not read much (if any) of the original comics, and make me want to know them. Most of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is comprised of characters I didn't really care for growing up. I liked Hulk and maybe Iron Man. Otherwise Spider-Man (now finally entering the MCU!) and the X-Men were my go to comics. I mean, they even had Saturday morning cartoons! Or was Spider-Man after school? Either way, I loved them!
I think the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Trek: Into Darkness) is amazing. I love his acting, and seeing/hearing him in the trailer is so exciting! The supporting cast looks great too: Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes, Spotlight), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Serenity), Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom, The Beach), to name a few.
The teaser trailer is very tantalizing, offering us our first peek into the magical realm of the CMU and mostly focuses on the character's origins — a conflicted man shown a world that he must come to understand and control. I'm really curious where they go with this, tying it into the current ongoing franchises. I'm almost completely unfamiliar with the source material. From Dr. Strange's true origins, motivating factors (though hinted at in the teaser trailer), to who his enemies are. It will all be new and unleashed to me this Fall once it comes to theaters. There's no way I'll be missing out on this one!
I'm curious what other story elements will be revealed in the full trailer. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long...
Do any of the featured movies interest you? Are you excited about Marvel's Doctor Strange? Was there someone else you thought may be better in the role of Dr. Stephen Strange? If so, who?
