69 | TRAILER TUESDAY | 69
Nooooooo! John Wick 2 (19M$) has fallen into fourth place! I honestly thought The Great Wall (21M$) would completely bomb, or at least score lower than third at the box office. I am curious how reviews have been so far. The LEGO Batman Movie (42M$) and Fifty Shades Darker (22M$) retain their slots from last weekend, though that will change once Logan releases.
I'm guessing that next week the current list will stay relatively the same, but who knows, maybe there will be a shakeup in the ranks. Get Out maybe? I could definitely see it taking over the third place slot (maybe even second). I don't think some of the contenders featured below will make much of an impact...
Collide - Trailer 2 (2/24/2017):
So as much as I talk shit about cheap thrills and mindless actions (though, I admit to loving the Fast and Furious franchise, so maybe that is the appeal here), Collide looks to be exactly that. Some of the scenes from the trailer look really great, and while possibly realistic, also very over-the-top. I'm also slightly ashamed I picked this trailer being it kind of misrepresents the storyline. But I like that a lot of it seems out of order in this one — the original was way too linear. It's not drastically misrepresented, mind you.
I've read that this movie has been in development hell/limbo for a while, being passed on to different production companies. Hopefully that's not a bad sign (as it usually is). Many of Nicholas Hoult's (X-Men: Apocalypse, Equals) movies (where he is the lead) haven't done very well, despite their production value. I'm not sure why, because I think he's a really good actor. What makes me relatively cautious, is that Anthony Hopkins (Transformers: The Last Knight, Solace) is in the movie. Hot of the trails of Westworld. Let me explain...
Studios do this thing where they take movies they've otherwise given up on and/or shelved, and suddenly rush them to market to ride on the coattails of a performer's renewed limelight/clout/whatever. Hopkins is an amazing actor (understatement), but that doesn't mean every project he's been a part of is. Thankfully, I personally think this movie looks good. I like the cinematography, style, and dialogue presented in the trailer.
I may not see this in theaters, but I wouldn't be opposed. Definitely seeing it when able, though! Collide also features the acting talents of Felicity Jones (maybe another coattail candidate? — Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Inferno) and Ben Kingsley (The Jungle Book, Self/Less)!
Rock Dog (2/24/2017):
Sooooooo Rock Dog... yeah... Much like Leap! I feel this animated film is a bit off. This one being more so because of the production value. It just looks cheap? Maybe I'm wrong, the voice-acting talent is pretty good actually. We have Luke Wilson (Concussion, Idiocracy), Eddie Izzard (Hannibal, Valkyrie), J.K. Simmons (Bastards, Patriots Day), Lewis Black (Inside Out, Farce of the Penguins), and many more. Okay, maybe I'm mostly pulled in by J.K. Simmons, but whatever!
I guess the production value and animation quality reminds me of The Nut Job, which featured the voice-acting one of my favorite actors, Liam Neeson. But apparently that movie is getting a sequel, soooooo...
Most children aren't going to care about those kinds of things, so it will still make for great entertainment for them. I, on the other hand, will be hard-pressed to even watch this on Netflix without the encouragement of someone else having interest. And maybe not even then. I can't imagine this holding a candle anywhere near its direct opposition — The LEGO Batman Movie. So I'm predicting this direct-to-DVD/BluRay-looking movie will be hitting those formats sooner than later.
Leap! (3/3/2017 or 4/21/2017):
Aside from taking issue with IMDb.com removing their message boards, where I could sometimes find some decent information about movies, is their lack of accurately updating release dates. At times I have two, three, or more conflicting dates, so I'm never entirely sure which is ultimately correct. Don't they know I try to arrange these in release order! GAH!
But that's not Ballerina's fault. Or Leap! as it were. The title change may just be for the US release and hopefully nothing about attempting to resticker a poor performing movie. Either way, I like the title a lot more, I think. Probably catchier for the kiddies too?
That being said, something about this movie feels a bit off to me. Some of the voice acting may be awkward or maybe I was turned off by the trailer showing so many key moments (naturally kids could care less). It still looks cute and it's probably better off with that April release, because I don't think it (or Rock Dog) have a chance at making more than The LEGO Batman Movie, even with it being out a few weeks. Depending on what's released at the same time, this may do fairly well with drawing in families. I know a certain someone or three who would love to see it!
Leap! features the voice-acting of Dane DeHaan (A Cure for Wellness, Life), Elle Fanning (20th Century Women, Three Generations), Maddie Ziegler (Dance Moms), and Carly Rae Jepsen (Grease Live!).
Logan - Super Bowl TV Spot (3/3/2017):
I usually don't follow up with newer trailers (unless only a teaser trailer was originally given), but this was a TV Spot that was forced on me via YouTube. Thankfully it followed the same marketing as the first trailer (unsure about the second, as I avoid it), showing little more than what was already known, tightly woven together with a song — in this case "Amazing Grace".
I'm really looking forward to this movie and I think it will definitely take number one at the box office on release. If this succeeds in a way that Deadpool has, the upward shift to more adult R-Rated superhero movies may become more prominent.
Trying to go into Logan with as little info as I can! You can find my previous blurbs here.
Iron Fist (3/17/2017):
The full trailer arrives for the final Defender! And it's an awesome one! If you missed it, you can catch the teaser trailer and my original blurbs here.
So we find that Danny Rand has returned home in hopes of reclaiming his family's business, but obviously it's fallen into the hands of some not-so-friendly people. And are we seeing more of The Hand? Those silent punks! Will his Kung Fu be up to par? It's a crime, but I still have yet to see Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, but need to before seeing this. Maybe not need to, but that's just how I roll! They already show an overlapping of characters and I'd just like to be in the know, ya know?
This is a great trailer with an awesome song choice ("I'm a Dragon" by Apashe) and I'm glad there are only a few weeks until its release!
Aside from those listed in the previous post, Iron Fist also stars Jessica Stroup (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, The Following), David Wenham (300, Van Helsing), and Rosario Dawson (The LEGO Batman Movie, Descent).
