As you can see from the new blog series badge, I’ve been experimenting some with Paint and PicMonkey. I’m still a bit hesitant to dive into Gimp 2, but hopefully at some point I will get more accustomed to it and/or Photoshop. I had a specific image in mind for weeks now (more specifically the projector and screen), and this is as close as it’s going to get for now. I originally wanted a calendar on the screen with a larger overlapping Tuesday-marked date.

While looking for some images, I thought to myself: “Why the hell wouldn’t I use the standard green-band trailer shot?” So I did, and as a compromise, I chose to display Tuesday in calendar form. I played around with different locations for the “Tuesday”, and eventually settled on directly after the title (though it covers part of the projector). Then I simply added my blog button instead of just using text, which I think looks nicer. Plus I just made the damn thing and wanted to use it more!

Anyhow, time is short today as I have a Sleep Study this evening. Fun times. Speaking of sleeping around and fun times, how about we get into some Double Hanky Panky Feature action…*

Captain Phillips (10/11/2013):

This trailer has been out for some time, but I was waiting to pair it up. This is based on a true story, but like always what is embellished upon is unknown to me. I’m interested in seeing this movie, considering I’m a long time fan of Tom Hanks. He seems to be selecting very specific roles (and has been for some time). The last two I recall were Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and Cloud Atlas, both of which I really wanted to see and have yet to. Neither seemed to be box-office hits, though the former more so of the two. Will this movie follow suit?

Saving Mr. Banks (12/20/2013):

Just a note of caution this trailer seems to be spoiler bound (or at least showing clips in chronological order). It seems Mr. Hanks has doubled down this year and hopefully one of these two films do well. This movie, however, places Mr. Hanks in the shoes of none-other-than Walt Disney himself. Now if I didn’t know any better, I’d say those sound like some mighty big shoes to fill. With all the actors involved on this project I can’t imagine it being a bad movie. There is just too much experience on screen, so this movie has a lot of potential!

I know close to absolutely nothing about Mary Poppins or its author. Honestly, as sad as it sounds, I don’t think I’ve even seen the movie from beginning to end, but rather just snippets. Maybe this would inspire me to see it? Or maybe I will be hounded for having not seen it yet, and have little choice in the matter...

Don Jon (9/27/2013):

Now to some kinky. I’ve only watched a handful of 3rd Rock from the Sun, but what I saw of it was hilarious. Now and again I’d see members of the cast elsewhere (I was already very familiar with John Lithgow), but Joseph Gordon-Levitt seems to be the most successful of the once lesser-known cast members. He’s been in many movies since — some of them blockbusters — and this is the first time I have noticed him being listed as writer/director. I know he has some entertainment production company focusing on collaborating artists, but that would take some time to go into. I am impressed, to say the least, at how far he’s come.

The movie looks entertaining and I’m posting the newest of the two trailers as it’s about half as long and, therefore, potentially revealing fewer spoilers (even though I really like how the first is done). I can’t lie… I’ve liked Johansson since Lost in Translation, which is a good movie I’d recommend. Also, Tony Danza? Holy crap! I may actually see this in the theater, just because I really like Gordon-Levitt’s acting and wouldn’t mind checking out (and supporting) his writing/directing skills.

Fading Gigolo (TBA 2013):

It seems John Turturro has written and directed a handful of movies (Romance & Cigarettes being the only one to ring a bell), but I only seem to recall him playing supporting cast/minor roles in a lot of movies. Maybe his Transformers role was bigger and most current? Either way, it seems like a light comedy that may have it’s moments (which all may be in the trailer). Unfortunately, those moments will likely have to wait until they make their way to Redbox or NFlix. I like a handful of the other cast members, but they definitely aren’t enough pull to get me to the theaters.

Getaway (8/30/2013):

Now this movie I’d like to pull me into theaters. I haven’t seen Ethan Hawke in a long time and now he has two recent releases (the other being The Purge). This movie looks like it’s Taken mixed with The Fast and the Furious and a sprinkle of Disney… I’m not sure how solid (or original for that matter) the plot of the movie is, but I wouldn’t object to seeing it, even more so if there is a sudden lull in viable alternate options. There is bound to be some good car chases and action scenes. Then again, I may just save my money. Sorry, Ethan… time will tell.

Devil’s Pass (8/23/2013):

This movie seems more independent/low budget than some of the above, but it’s the subject matter that intrigues me. Back during the A to Z Challenge a blogger friend (and someone whose blog I’ve fallen grossly behind on), Shannon at The Warrior Muse, was writing about mysterious and paranormal occurrences throughout history. I had never heard of the Dyatlov Pass Incident before, and even in the comments mentioned about how it seemed to be a great set-up for a book or movie and was surprised it hadn’t been done yet (to my knowledge). This movie is based on said incident. Granted the movie is taking great liberties with the content, but they seem to be recreating some of the same events (or discussing them) described historically. In general, the whole incident is creepy. Having it mixed in with horror should make it even more so. I’ve no idea WTF those things are in the trailer, but those are the types of things that creep me the fuck out!

*See what I did there?**
**Double Hanky Panky Feature?***
***Two Tom Hank movies?! Two sexy-time movies?! No?!****
****You’re killin’ me, Smalls...

Do any of the highlighted movies appeal to you? Who is your favorite actor turned writer and/or director? Remember Who’s the Boss? Tony-freakin-Danza! Which Tom Hanks movie looks more interesting to you? Any thoughts about him portraying Walt Disney? Have you ever heard of the Dyatlov Pass Incident? If not, I’d recommend following the link...

Any idea and/or thoughts about the Trailer Tuesday badge?
Technically this title was used in association with a [Mostly] Wordless Wednesday post. One of which has garnished enough views to become one of the top/popular posts for my blog over the past couple weeks (as dictated by the sidebar display). As I was rifling through possible blog series titles — Cryton Critique, Chronicles Critique, Cryton Critic, Jak’s Janky Joint (and old blog title idea) to name a few — Generation Jak kept tugging at me.

For some time I wanted separate blogs with specific focuses. The Cryton Chronicles would be about my thoughts, opinions, life experiences, etc etc. Jak’s Janky Joint was going to focus on the entertainment side: Movie, music, and gaming reviews. Meta Magic (untouched at this time) focusing solely on Magic: The Gathering collectible card game. And last, but not least, Dreams in the Shade of Ink would be where I post my fiction.

In the end, I believe that trying to manage so many blogs, without a central hub (read: website), would be a bit too much. Given how random some of the postings would be, a lot of the time these blogs wouldn’t be updated for weeks (or months, as with my fiction blog), which means the best place to host my reviews would be my main blog. That way their sporadic nature can be camouflaged by my other entries.

And the Title Goes To...

As hinting above (and by the title) I decided to stick with Generation Jak as the header title for review posts. This doesn’t necessarily mean I will only stick to the movies of my generation, but has dual meaning when critiquing an older movie through the eyes of someone outside that film’s original generation (as a friend pointed out). Maybe I can still use a tagline like “A Cryton Critique” if wanting to. I’m just going to test the waters, and adapt as I go along. I hope to create a badge for the reviews and use a rating system, whether a 4-5 star rating;1-10 numbered rating; or some other variant. That’s all still in the works and if evolving down the road I can always go back and adjust/update the older reviews accordingly.

I’ve done a little researching on writing/giving reviews. Many forums and comments from people seem to lean towards avoiding spoilers citing it’s a sign of laziness and shows a lack of consideration for readers who may have yet to watch the movie, read the book, play the game (even if an older/classic/etc). It’s best not to assume everyone has experienced it, which makes sense to me, and if following along you know I’m not a fan of them. So, this wraps up a back and forth internal debate I was having since deciding to delve into reviewing. I can still give a warning if I feel something may be informational for the review, but could be considered a possible spoiler.

Coming Soon

Yesterday was meant to be my review of 2 Guns, but circumstances dictated instead I would have to deal with my car finally completely crapping out on me (It’s dead dead). Thankfully it wasn’t on the highway, or on the ramp where it died the first time. It was the beginning of a series of unfortunate events last night, so I can’t lie... I’m looking forward to reflecting on the positives this past week had to offer.

So currently 2 Guns, and Man of Steel are two movie reviews in the works. If all goes according to plan (which hasn’t been the case lately) I’ll be seeing Elysium tomorrow morning. If so, that review will also be in the pipeline.

Bookwise, I have to buy Fireseed One to read it and then it’s sequel. Also, I have two Neiko’s Five Land Adventure books to read and plan reviewing them all. There are also a handful of people I’ve met while blogging with books that I want to purchase and review as well!

And if we can dredge up an evening we shared over a month ago with some decent accuracy, my friend and I could still attempt a review of Unrinetown: The Musical!

Any opinion on the chosen title for the review blog series? Any avid readers of movie, game, music, and/or book reviews know of any reliable sites to read some?

TGIF
I know it seems impossible, but this entry should be mainly pictures and few words. I know in person I’m usually the silent type, but when writing (or discussing a topic of passion) I can drone on and on and on and on and on and on... You get the picture.

Speaking of pictures:

I get ALL the mail!
I love getting mail when it isn’t spam and/or bills!

Sometimes I get very personal mail:
Someone understands my... nuts?
This was such a sweet gesture, and I wish I could share the words that were written inside, but I never asked beforehand. They were very kind and touching, to say the least. When seeing the card they said it was perfect. I couldn’t agree more.

Then I was treated to yet another surprise:

Dinner! NOM NOM NOM!
My friend over at Daily Discovery made a wonderfully delicious meal this evening, and was kind enough to share with me! It was Turkey Meatball & Cheese and Spinach Ravioli, and it was amazing!

She said she was happy to cook for me, and I said I was happy to eat for her >.>

It only took a few hundreds of hours, but it finally happened:

Oh My Nuts! I made a button!
With the help of PicMonkey I was able to design a blog button! Behold! Bask in its glory! I really wanted the “glow” to be around the nut, but after time I liked the idea of it surrounding the rodent's cute little paw as it stretched out to grasp its Destiny.

Now if I can only figure out how to post it on the blog allowing for others to use it if they so choose..

That wasn’t too wordy, was it? Some of the other entries have really pushed the envelope in that department.
When was the last time you received a special card? What do you think of the new blog button? Now to make badges for my blog series...

VI | TRAILER TUESDAY | VI

It’s been pretty exciting getting out to the movies lately (hoping Elysium is next on the docket). I believe I have a series title for my various reviews, and am already drafting up two movie reviews. I still have to get on some reading (recently I’ve received quite an abundance of books from giveaways and tenants moving), but the thought of that scares me. Part of me thinks if I start reading that my writing will suffer, but there’s no other way to get a review done. Same with game reviews.

Watching movies, reading books, playing games all take time. In my mind it sounds a bit very overwhelming.

In the meantime, while I hammer away a decent system of balancing those activities with other life priorities, I have a few trailers to share. Some have been out for a few weeks, while others are brand-spanking-new. I was torn on providing the teaser trailers for some of the selections instead, but I’d rather get out the newest previews available and let everyone else decide if they want to watch them (and possibly see too much) or not. Plus, when noticing that almost all of the teaser trailers were just as long as the full trailers I figured “what’s the point?”...

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (8/7/2013):

A site listed this as releasing on August, 16 2013 (hence showing it today), which isn’t accurate as it’s already in theaters. This means I should have posted it last week. Either way, I never saw the first of this series (Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief) and I’ve never read the books. From the sounds of it, though, some were fairly disappointed about the first films adaptation. That’s pretty standard, but many believed they wouldn’t bother continuing the film versions (It grossed almost $89 million on an estimated budget of $95 million — Is that really bad or pretty average?). Apparently that isn’t the case.

Supposedly most of the cast reprised their roles for the sequel. Whether that was due to their faith and belief in the franchise, contracts, or both is beyond me. The trailer doesn’t do much for me, reminiscent of the trailer for the first movie, though I like some of the more major actors involved. Maybe if I had read the books I’d be more excited (aside from the reviews I saw). Depending on how this movie does — or maybe it doesn’t even matter at this point — we will likely be seeing the trilogy being completed.

Seeing Nathan Fillion is in it, though, calls for at least a RBox rental!

Prisoners (9/20/2013):

This was one of three trailers I thought about opting the teaser trailers for (one movie I decided to completely wait to highlight until another time).  I like the actors in this movie, and the storyline and acting seem pretty solid. I may not have children of my own, but I definitely can empathize with those who may have experienced something like this in life.

Hopefully they keep the drama and tension really tight throughout, and really amp up the emotions that would be involved in such a circumstance. The trailer leads me to believe they will. There is a lot of opportunity for amazing acting in this drama, a genre in which almost all of the actors involved possess a level — if not expert — of familiarity with.

Thor: The Dark World (11/8/2013):

Out of the latest MARVEL movies released over the past couple of years, Thor was the one that surprised me the most.  I knew I would like the Iron Man franchise, and was really hopeful about Captain America: The First Avenger, but Thor I just kind of blew off. In fact, the only reason for seeing it — I believed — was because it was directly tied into The Avengers movie (which I loved despite never really being a big fan of the comics or any singular mainstay of the team). And I figured after being disappointed with Captain America: The First Avenger, how bad could it be?

I heard some people had issues with some canon associated with the comics, but being completely ignorant of almost any printing I was pretty unscathed. As a result, I was pleasantly surprised.

So now I’m in it for the long haul. MARVEL has seen to that with their crafty web of intertwining movie plots (regardless of how major or minor they may be), and I’m looking forward to watching this sequel when it’s released into theaters!

Her (11/20/2013):

This movie looks really interesting. Oddly, I don’t necessarily feel the concept is too far out of the realm of what could be a natural progression for some. Maybe I am just a tad bit too reclusive? Think what you will, but the trailer pulls me in enough to make me want to find out just how this story is told and to what conclusion.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Joaquin Phoenix (Maybe Walk the Line?), since he went all “pseudo psycho with I’m Still Here (which I still haven’t seen!). He was recently cast with Amy Adams (who seems to be everywhere now) in The Master, which I’d really like to see. It seemed like a strange movie as well, but he is clearly comfortable with those types of roles.

A tragedy is that I’ve yet to see any of the movies highlighted in the trailer by the same director. Two of which (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation) I’ve heard really great things about (though, also that you will either love them, or hate them — I’m betting I fall into the former group), and have been on my NFlix queue for months! I better get on it!

The Monuments Men (12/18/2013):

When I heard George Clooney was working on this project — writing, directing, acting — I was pretty excited. I love many period movies and most I've seen revolve around wartime. This concept seems like a fresh, original take on the WWII era, that isn’t directly highlighting/focusing the war itself. I’m not aware of any other movie he has either written and/or directed, but there may be a handful.

I have no idea what it is about Clooney (short of knowing the only difference between him and I is a little hairiness...), but I think he is awesome. He just has that reserved “Yeah, I know I’m a badass and that’s okay because I won’t rub it in your face” kind of look to him (I’m pretty sure that’s a “look”). I don’t even recall which movie got me roped into liking him so much.

Quick “datavault” retrieval suggests: Ocean’s Eleven, though I do recall him being Batman. I don’t know...

The Monuments Men also features the equally talented Matt Damon, John Goodman, Cate Blanchett, and Bill Murray! The chemistry between some of those involved is already apparent to me within the trailer and I can only imagine how outstanding it will be throughout the entire movie. This is definitely a movie I’ll be wanting to see right away.

Batman: Arkham Origins (10/25/2013):

It’s been some time since I’ve last highlighted a video game trailer. Back in my I | Trailer Tuesday | I episode I spoke about how the graphics in video games are becoming so lifelike that it can sometimes be hard to tell if you are watching live-action video or not. This was one that made me question that, especially in the first moments of the trailer.

This franchise has garnished a ton praise, and while I own the first (a collector’s edition), I’ve yet to play it. Maybe once this third in the series is released I will finally get around to trying them. The graphics alone are amazing, and I’ve read that each predecessor has improved game mechanics over the last. It seems evident the developers behind the franchise continue to go above and beyond with each new title in the series!

Do any of the highlighted movies catch your interest? Have you read the Percy Jackson series and/or seen the first movie? What was the last movie you saw featuring Joaquin Phoenix? Do you think (...or have you...) someone can fall in love with an artificial intelligence? If a George Clooney fan, what movie or TV series caused you to “recognize” him? Did some of that Batman: Arkham Origins look live-acted or is it just me?!

[MOSTLY] WORDLESS WEDNESDAY - TURNING 100

Source: Twitter.com
Well, not quite turning 100 in terms of human years, but this is officially my 100th post! That is quite an achievement for me, considering I wasn’t writing for 12 years before this past November.

Somehow I feel like 100 should be a big deal, but I’ve noticed so many people continually write on a daily basis (subjectively making my life hell with how slow I am at reading! HA! Kidding... sort of) without so much as a challenge needing to prompt their fingers into furious action. 100 posts must be a drop in the bucket for those folks. I think I will continue to highlight my consecutive 100 marks and maybe try for something fancy on the 500th. That’s still a long way out, but perhaps if I begin those damned reviews it won’t be so far out afterall. Perhaps instead of talking about doing them all the time I should just get down to business and write ‘em.

This is supposed to be [mostly] wordless, but you know me. I wanted to make sure I highlighted this small milestone for The Cryton Chronicles! Now to share some simple randomness...

Little Treasures
Crooks guarding the prizes.
Catherine Stine's Ruby's Fire and Jeff Hirsch's The Eleventh Plague
These are the two book I won from two separate giveaways hosted by Catherine Stine. I just wanted to place up a picture of them — along with Crooks — to show how excited I am to have received them. I’ve mentioned Catherine a few times, and I plan on buying the eBook of the first of her series (and the second to keep the signed copy sent in pristine condition, because I’m anal like that) and attempt a review. I hope she isn't as nervous about me butchering my first book review as I am!

Friends in High Places

Monday night on the News, while visiting my grandma, the News anchors were talking about some shirts (I can’t recall for what now, except it involved some little kid acting as mayor and receiving the keys to the city? Maybe? It was cute whatever it was), and when they were done showcasing them Amelia folded her shirt real nice, while her co-anchor (and husband) just bunched his up and set it down. For some reason this had me laughing my ass off and randomly thought I would tweet Chris Shaffer (the station's meteorologist) to ask if he noticed.

I didn’t expect a reply back, but was ecstatic when I did! Then I went back on today and noticed the others had as well! I maybe went a little Twitter crazy and favored and retweeted their replies, but I wasn’t able to control myself. I always get giddy when I see celebs replying to fans, and Twitter seems the most commonplace. Maybe that is just because it’s so instant?

I joked to my friend saying how I was two days late noticing the other replies and would have to be more active if I want to be “hip” and all that jazz.

Okay, okay... so these individuals aren’t really friends over some shared tweets, but that doesn’t mean I can’t pretend!

dun Dun DUN!!

Whatever helps me sleep at night...

Lovelace (8/9/2013):

Yesterday for Trailer Tuesday I joked about the movie Rubber not being a porno, so when I saw this trailer (a friend said there has been some buzz around it; the movie, not the trailer) I found it completely fitting (and hilarious) to share it.

So here is a movie about the porno business, and it seems to have quite an interesting cast. I’m uncertain, but I wonder if this may have a limited release.

Either way, the content is bound to help me sleep worlds better than imaginary friends ;-)

And, as they say in the movie business: that’s a wrap! They may even say that in the porno industry. Though, their “wrap”s may be code for condoms, since they have to use those now.

Have you reached your 100th post yet? If so, did you make a special post for it and celebrate? Ever tweet a celeb and get a response (and/or a favorite/retweet) back?
